“ It’s where I keep them” Guest Blogger Loren Irving

I’ve had the honor & pleasure of guiding and spending time with Loren over the past 6 years at Norlakes. There’s not many people that love the Babine river as much as he does. He starts thinking of his next trip to the babs on the van ride back into Smithers at the end of each trip I am sure. An outstanding Fly tier, photgrapher, musician, friend and family man. His reach is tremendous and you often bump into people who either know him or have corresponded with him at some point in time and they all have the same thing to say “What a wonderful guy”

Note:  I am pretty sure you have this photo……….

You asked me for something for your blog and I am happy to comply with a story you’ll remember.   What made me think of this is your blog entry of the Peanut Gallery.

I have fished the Babine since 1995 and missed only a couple years for this reason or that.  I think as we fish a place annually we get thinking that our accumulated knowledge of the river and the runs we’ll get better at hooking these incredible fish.  Well……

As we sometimes say, I was “needing a fish” when I had fished fished 5 days before hooking and landing one during my week.  You put me into one of my faviorites, a run I think of a great deal the rest of the year and sure enough I hooked a fish on a Boss.  You saw this from down river and were hell bent on getting to me with a net to change this luck a bit. And this I appreciated.

So you run the boat up quickly with 2 other guys who are happy that I had this fish on and we then have a peanut gallery assembled.  The end result was that you netted the fish and my luck had changed in an instant as it some times will happen.

I heard one guy make the statement “what’s he doing with his rod to the side like that?” and followed by “he’s horsing him too much”…thinking I couldn’t hear him.  What a pleasure.

Fish landed, skunk off.

Then you notice the Boss Fly stuck in the middle of my back in the raincoat and bring that to their attention!  “How’d that happen!, Hows that D loop goin for ya! Etc”  And I am laughing too. Well damn it, it’s where I like to keep ‘em.

Thank you so much for sharing Loren. It was a pretty hilarious situation. I don’t know where that picture of the fly stuck in your back ever did get too. AC
