Explantion of the name "Feather Forge Fly Company" Part 1
How you land where you are is not often a straight line. Little things that happen along the way determine the trajectory of your path. Around a decade ago, I started brainstorming ideas for my company name. At the time I was bartending, and my only guiding was on the Bow River. I asked a regular group of bar patrons to write down some possible names for my company. I was surprised at how many of them took it seriously. They managed to scribble down nearly 2 pages of potential names (none of which I chose, but it was a start). Most of them didn't know a damn thing about fly fishing, or what a drift boat, Brown trout, or stonefly was. I thought this a potential advantage as they could break it down into its simplest parts. Of course, I got some humorous titles that they pictured me rowing down the river in a boat sporting a giant decal with a name like "Big Brown Floaters."
My inability to make a decision went one step further when I was forced into GSTlandia after I invoiced "too much" one year ($30,000) The government of Canada gives you a 1-time opportunity to get out of this predicament and only charges you GST for sums of money collected over the $30,000. I was forced to register with CRA and now be that pain in the ass guide who charges GST (I don't believe a lot of my peers were charging it at the time). Now I am at the office of registry and asked for the name of my company, in that exact Moment I came up with the ever so unique "Aaron Caldwell Guide Service." Boooooooring
I struggled for a few more years and kicked different names around, never really finding one that spoke to me. After the death of the old blog, I always wanted for a website again. I started down the road of an online platform for selling my flies so back to brainstorming with a friend that knows of these things. I wanted to highlight the fact that " I " or at least someone was making the flies. That I poured myself into them, they were products of my creative mind, being a combination of years of experience not only at the vise but in hours spent fishing the flies. I wanted it to be STRONG like "Dirk Digglers" name exploding in Neon lights from Boogie Nights. We never did quite get to that, but we came up with Feather Forge fly Company. I had some hesitations with the amount of F's in the name, but he assured me that it was fine.
Fast forward a while, and I've registered the name "feather forge fly company" got my Instagram handle, acquired the domain address I wanted and email accounts. Now I'm not sure that the online fly sales appeals so much anymore. . . . . . Not that it doesn't appeal, but I am selling to my tying capacity already. I have a hard time producing enough par stock to keep my boxes full as it was. Everything is on hold again, but I am closer.
