"Da Bomb" guest poster Dr. Kent Davenport tells a tale of a spicy sauce

One of the traditions of Babine Norlakes is hot sauce. We have a collection of hot sauce that can satisfy everyone. One upmanship came along and the hottest sauces were brought by anglers wanting to impress the gang. The heat is measured by Scoville Units and Tabasco is the baseline with a rating of 2000 units. The winner was and still is "Da Bomb" at 321,000 units. It is usually added to soup. You have to be careful not to get any of it on your skin. Some people wear gloves. Usually a toothpick is dipped into the bottle and 1/4 inch of sauce is carefully allowed to adhere to the toothpick. Many spectators are involved (Ah too Much Too Much). The toothpick is then dipped into the soup bowl. Sometimes the macho men appear and sprinkle the sauce liberally into the soup. They are usually seen to disappear out the door absent for 2-3 hours.

My wife came to the camp once on a trout fishing trip and tasted the sauce and liked it. I was horrified when I watched her devour it. (She is of Chinese descent and her genetic code has allowed her this activity). She wanted some for home in Hawaii and I tried to order it, but it could not be shipped without a hazmat (hazardous material) license. John Flaherty came out to Hawaii with his new wife and brought a bottle with him. The bottle is now almost empty and I have instructions to obtain another. My wife says she has gone from toothpick to drops and asks for two bottles.
